I spent days looking for somewhere decent to stay in Bangkok, I googled: Hidden oasis and unknown gem – as I was determined to find a special, quiet place to relax after a long flight. I also wanted something affordable, luxurious yet with character and charm… I searched for days, and then I finally found it in Phranakorn Nornlen. Yet, when I did arrive, I did so with minimal expectations, and I realised I’d won the jackpot in having found one of the most enchanting places that I’ve ever stayed (as an avid traveller, this is saying something).
The downside of Phranakorn Nornlen, is the fact I didn’t want to leave.
Every time I went into Bangkok, the hustling bustling busyness got to me so I’d run back the B&B, so I could spend more time there. Relaxing in their oasis of calm.
It is located not too far from Kaosan road, I walked it in about 10 minutes – yet it’s far enough way to avoid being overly touristy. Everything from the divine ginger tea, mouthwatering food, hangout area and design is just beyond words.
It was or is made up to be an old marketplace, so you have antique mini stalls in the foyer/ marketplace like the hairdresser, post office, corner store, sewing room etc. the design is fun, eclectic and oozes character and charm.
And don’t get me started on the room design… each room is unique and is shabby chic meets high design. I especially love, the amazing features such as murals on the wall of books shelves and butterflies that look like they could come to life any second. Books lamp, handmade shower curtains, bedlinen, the antique typewriter…
The very best part of Phranakorn Nornlen is that they do creative workshops; tie-die, stamping, sewing or cooking.
As I was staying more than two nights I even got a little gift bag – and the cream, mosquito repellent and fan all came to good use over the course of my stay in Thailand.
While it was a bit more that I had anticipated for a normal Thai B&B it was worth every penny. Phranakorn Nornlen has not forgotten it’s all in the details; from the homely service, it’s an oasis in a city of craziness, a hidden gem, and a real treat.
So much so that I changed my flights so that I could come back through Bangkok just so I could stay a few more nights. And I imagine I will do the same anytime I am in Thailand, Asia or the general vicinity (any excuse!). Hence, if you are ever in Bangkok you know where to go. And I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
